What is Artificial Insemination?

For couples trying to start, or grow their family, there can be nothing more frustrating and disappointing then week-after-week of no success. Places like Reproductive Fertility Center are dedicated to helping people fulfill their dreams of family by providing them with the most technologically advanced infertility solutions available.

Artificial Insemination Defined

The artificial insemination process is one of the most common infertility treatments in reproductive medicine. Artificial insemination involves fertilizing a woman’s eggs using a man’s sperm through scientific means. Most often, only the strongest and healthiest sperm will be chosen to be placed directly into a woman’s uterus or cervix, while she is ovulating, thus increase the chances of pregnancy.

The most common method of artificial insemination is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) where the sperm is placed directly into the uterine cavity through a catheter near the time of ovulation. This setup allows the sperm to bypass the cervix and improve the delivery of the sperm to the egg.

Artificial Insemination can be performed when a couple needs assistance due to a man’s inability to release sperm towards a woman’s egg, impotence, premature ejaculation or other medical conditions. This procedure can also be performed if a woman’s fallopian tubes are blocked, or if there are problems with the sperm, such as low count or low motility, or an incompatibility between the sperm and the woman’s cervical mucus.

Benefits of Artificial Insemination

Artificial Insemination is a revolutionary fertility procedure with numerous benefits. The Artificial Insemination procedure provides a way for couples who are faced with male infertility or female infertility to conceive. Artificial Insemination can be an effective treatment for individuals who have mild issues interfering with their fertility. The procedure is less invasive, quicker and less expensive than In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and can address a number of issues including ovulation concerns, issues with cervical fluid, and mild sperm issues. Another benefit of artificial insemination is that it allows same-sex couples to conceive a child by way of a donor.

Overall, Artificial Insemination puts less stress on the body than other, more intense procedures such as IVF. Gentler conditions may be better for embryo quality and development. Being fertilized and growing in a lab can be too harsh for some embryos, so being able to grow in a uterus may make all the difference.

Risks of Artificial Insemination

Complications as a result of Artificial Insemination are rare. Mild cramping can occur during the procedure, but this usually subsides within 15-20 minutes. The risk of infection is extremely small. Less than one percent of women ever have a significant problem after IUI.

Success of Artificial Insemination

The absolute success rate depends on your age, the conditions contributing to infertility, the  medicines you may be taking to enhance your fertility and the sperm count in the specimen.

In general, Artificial Insemination by way of Intrauterine Insemination doubles the pregnancy rates that are typically achieved with intercourse alone. However, couples who have multiple reasons for not being pregnant are less likely to achieve a pregnancy. Your physician will estimate your possible success rate with Artificial Insemination based on your medical history.
